Aluminium reinforced PVC
composite material was developed as a feasible
alternative substitute for
automobile bumper application. The composite was produced using compression molding.
Comparative result analysis of the composite with
conventional polymeric bumper materials showed it has the highest dynamic
mechanical stiffness and a better thermal stability than PBT, ABS and PVC. Long
term performance comparison of the composite with PVC showed it has much higher
stiffness and better material stability (lower loss of stiffness) over a period
of 32 years of usage. The result also showed that the aluminium PVC
composite has considerably low density as compared to steel and other alloyed
bumpers and thus will result to fuel consumption savings (reduction in overall
vehicle weight). The composite can thus provide a
valuable potential substitute material for automobile bumper application.
